In the original Dalek serial, it was said that before becoming Daleks the Dalek species were known as Dals. It was not shown what Dals look(ed) like.

In the TV Century 21 Comics in the mid-60's, the Dals were shown as blue humanoids, who mutated into Daleks due to radiation. However despite this, the Dals and Daleks considered themselves to be the same species.

However, in Genesis of the Daleks, it was stated that the Daleks mutated from a (non-blue) human-looking species called Kaleds. And the Daleks definitely didn't consider themselves to be the same as the Kaleds.
