Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart died peacefully in a nursing home. The Doctor learned of this in a telephone call near the start of "The Wedding of River Song". From the point of view of the nurse who told the Doctor about it, the Brigadier's death had occurred "a few months ago". (This fulfilled what the Doctor had said in "Battlefield": that the Brigadier was "supposed to die in bed".)
