River electrocuted herself in order to help the Tenth Doctor defeat the Vashta Narada in the Library, as seen in "Forest of the Dead". Even if she'd had regenerations left (which she didn't, as per "Let's Kill Hitler"), she'd have been killed outright, as she told the Doctor he would have been. However, at some point the Twelfth Doctor gifted her with a sonic screwdriver that allowed her consciousness to be saved within the CAL computer, and as such she lived on for a time, and was able to interact with Clara, Vastra, Jenny, Strax, the TARDIS and the Eleventh Doctor in "The Name of the Doctor". The episode implies that her consciousness says goodbye to the Doctor in that episode, but it remains to be seen if that is the case.
