William Hartnell, as the First Doctor, appeared in "The Day of the Doctor" by means of stock footage -- from earlier episodes -- that was incorporated into the new footage. (The same method was used for the other past incarnations that appeared in the story.)

When there was no suitable stock audio, the voice-over artist John Guilor imitated Hartnell's voice.
