The child was not a zombie in the Vodun (Voodoo) meaning of the word. As revealed in "the Doctor Dances", he was animated by partial repairs made to his body by Chula nanogenes, using incomplete information on human genetics, not by any supernatural force -- by science, not by religion or magic. When the nanogenes gained better genetic information (from the child's mother), they completed their repairs & restored him to full, healthy life. They also repaired fully all the other humans they had affected.
