The Last Great Time WarEdit

The Last Great Time War was fought primarily between the Daleks and the Time Lords, although many other species fell victim to it. As the War progressed, the Time Lords resorted to using almost all of the "forbidden" weapons in their Omega Arsenal (see "The Day of the Doctor") & became as great a threat -- & as hated -- as the Daleks (see "The Night of the Doctor"). Eventually, under Rassilon as their President, the Time Lords adopted a plan, the "Ultimate Sanction", that made them an even greater threat than the Daleks.

As revealed during "The End of Time", the "Ultimate Sanction" would have destroyed the universe and all life in it. The Time Lords planned to "ascended to become creatures of pure consciousness". It was to prevent this destruction that the Doctor ended the war.

We know very little about the war itself, although we do know that it was extensive & extremely destructive. The Gelth told Charles Dickens in "The Unquiet Dead" that "The whole universe convulsed. The Time War raged. Invisible to smaller species but devastating to higher forms."

The little we have seen concentrated on events on or near to Gallifrey at the end of the war &, as the Partisan said to Rassilon in "The End of Time", "This is only the furthest edge of the Time War. But at its heart, millions die every second, lost in bloodlust and insanity. With time itself resurrecting them, to find new ways of dying over and over again."

Other Time WarsEdit

Of course this wasn't the only Time War ever, or they wouldn't have called it the "Last Great" one. But when people refer to "The Time War", this is the one they mean.

We don't get any details from the series about previous Time Wars, although it's implied that the war against the Great Vampires long ago was one. The Eighth Doctor Adventures novels show a previous Time War called "The Second War in Heaven" (which also ended with the Doctor destroying Gallifrey, although that time it got better), and these novels and other TV sources give us a little information about earlier Time Wars, most of which seemed to have been from Rassilon's time.
