The Time War primarily took place between the 1996 TV movie and "Rose", though various writers have stated that the Time War began in "Genesis of the Daleks".

In "The Night of the Doctor", we learned that the Eighth Doctor was aware of the Time War but didn't fight in it. In "The Day of the Doctor", we saw that it was the next incarnation, who didn't use the name Doctor (but is called the "War Doctor" in screen credits & was played by John Hurt), who actually fought.
