As explained in "A Good Man Goes to War", "River Song" results from the translation of "Melody Pond" into the language of the Gamma Forest & then the translation of the result back into English. "Melody" became "Song", which is straightforward. Because "the only water in the forest is the river", "Pond" became "River". The order of given name & surname was also switched around -- many cultures place the surname first.
