It had been decided that David Tennant would leave the series, and Russell T Davies was going to also step down as producer. In order to facilitate a transition between the new producer and new Doctor, it was decided that a "gap year" would take place over 2008-2009 with only limited production of Doctor Who (the 2008 Christmas special was filmed months earlier than usual, as part of the main Series 4 production block, and the remaining 4 specials would be filmed over a condensed production period in the first half of 2009, with the new Doctor to be announced at the start of the new year). Tennant took the opportunity to sign up for a season of Shakespeare during the time he would normally have been filming Doctor Who.
